Cataracts? KNOw your options
This website has been created as a resource for patients who may feel overwhelmed by the cataract treatment options available to them. My inspiration to publish this content stems from the gratuity that I have received from patients that I have interacted with in the past, in which the time we spent reviewing the ins and outs of cataracts and treatment options resulted in a patient making a more informed medical decision. Some of these patients may have had cataract consults in the past, and even told their providers that they do not have any more questions at the end of their visits. However, questions often come up after you leave your doctor’s office; and the more you educate yourself, the more questions you realize you now have.
The cataract conundrum is not at all suprising when you take a step back and consider:
- There are usually 4 or more treatment options to choose from.
- Sometimes the various treatment options do not appear to be very different at all (especially through the eyes of a patient).
- Your eye doctor is a busy person. Cataract surgery discussions can take a lot of time. Ideally as a patient, you can enter the conversation with a baseline level of knowledge to ensure you get the most important questions to you answered during your encounter(s) with your eye doctor. It is never the wrong answer to schedule a second consultation with your cataract surgeon to further discuss lens choices. These are your eyes we are talking about!
Compound the above with the fact that so many eye care services now have an out of pocket fee attached to them and everything becomes amplified.
